The power of communication technologies stems from the fact that they help us to Exchange Information with others. While it is true that modern solutions to communicating over distances often provide capabilities that would not have been available to our ancestors, it is also true that many earlier societies had innovative solutions to communicating in a way that was innovative, and meaningful in their daily lives.

Fun Facts

  • Over 2000 years ago, Smoke Signals were used in China to assist soldiers in communicating information regarding the location of enemies who were approaching the Great Wall.

  • In the 19th century, the telegraph was invented, allowing almost instantaneous communication from parts of North America to Europe.

Most of us would not think of the examples mentioned above as technologies, but they were as important to the lives of many, just as satellites and cell phones are to ours. Let us remember this!

  • MORSE MAGIC

    • Computers, cell phones, and the Internet probably come to mind when most of us think of the role of technology in communications. Long before computers, cell phones, and the Internet came to be, a form of communication that has been vital to the history and evolution of long-distance communications was invented and deployed. The resources  provide an historical overview, as well as a cool interactive tool to explore Morse Code.
